Ringing in the New Year with a Healthy YOU!

Let’s face it, it’s pretty cliché to have the New Year’s resolution of a healthy lifestyle.

You know why that is the one main thing so many people want to change?  Because it’s your health, your mind, your body.

Who doesn’t want to feel better and enjoy life more?

Of course, we all do.

Weeding Out Wheat is a book that will make you think twice about how you go about getting a healthy - feel good lifestyle.

Buy the Book

I recently reviewed this book called Weeding Out Wheat written by husband and wife team, Luke and Trisha Gilkerson.

Together these two have read numerous medical journals and studied what the bible says about wheat.  They have also studied wheat and the changes that have happened to it and other foods throughout history.

With all their research they saw how complex all this is.  It can make your head spin.  So they decided to write a book sharing much of their knowledge that would be understood by the everyday person.

This book is just over 100 pages and really does make for an easy read.  It did make me think about what I put into my mouth and how I feel afterwards.

I appreciate that this book was not written to be above my head and was not dumbed down so much that I felt like a child.  It gave me enough information that I feel I can make an educated decision about my health.  They sight all there sources are are honest if something is speculation or scientifically proven.  The changes that have happened to wheat are substantial.

I suggest reading this book and making your own decision about your health.

We decided to majorly cut back on wheat. We may even end up cutting it out completely.

Research shows all the problems wheat causes even if you don’t have full blown Celiac Disease.

Simply Put: A Study In Economics {A review}

One of the required High School courses for our state is a half credit of Economics.

I honestly don’t remember anything about Economics from my high school education.

I lived in fear of teaching it.  I mean, I’d like to think I know, but do I?

Simply Put

I was beyond grateful to be able to review Simply Put: A Study In Economics. Written by Catherine Jaime.

This book 139 page book covers:

  • 36 lessons
  • Review questions for each lesson
  • Mid-Term Exam
  • Final Exam
  • 8, yes, 8 different appendixes
  • A Bibliography and suggested additional resources
  • A glossary of terms used throughout the book and economics in general

Each lesson covers a certain topic.  The lessons are short in reading and give a general overview and sometimes an example of when something has happened in our history.

Catherine Jaime says that the book is written from a classic liberal point of view.  Often known as conservative.  I felt the book showed pros and cons of many economic situations.

My 9th grader has been using this book.  He has done about 2 to 3 lessons each week.  I began by having him read one lesson and then do the review questions.  I have recently changed to having him read and I read then we meet and discuss what we think.  I often use the review questions as starting points in our conversations, but not always, sometimes we just have a natural conversation about our reading.

My 9th grader and I were both very concerned that this book would be boring.  I just kept telling him that it was required to graduate and just have an opened mind and get through it.  Once you get started, it seemed hard for us to stop after just one lesson. Sometimes we didn’t.

Since starting this book he has enrolled in an online personal finance class with an overview of economics.  He chose to take this class since he has been enjoying this economics book so much that he did want to learn more.

A few of the chapters covered in this book are:

Lesson 9: Standard of Living

Lesson 15: Voluntary Exchange and Free Trade

Lesson 28: Competition vs. Monopolies

Lesson 30: Minimum Wages

Lesson 33: Unemployment and Unions

There are review questions on each chapter that range from about 3-10 questions each.

The mid-term and final exam are 30 questions each.

This and the accompanying teacher guide can be purchased as a download from Currclick

My family isn’t the only lucky ones who got to review this.

Stories of the Pilgrims–An audiobook resource.

It’s almost Thanksgiving……

For the past few years we have taken some time right before Thanksgiving to learn about the pilgrims and their coming to America for religious freedom.

To keep things different each year we use a different resource.

This year I was able to review a wonderful resource.

Stories of the pilgrims

Stories of the Pilgrims Audiobook by Jim Hodges.

Audiobooks are a tradition in our house as well, we often listen to them while we do our daily chores or while we play quietly with Legos or doing a puzzle.

Are you traveling over Thanksgiving.  This would be a wonderful way to pass the time!!

This one fit in perfect.

Often times we would find ourselves wanting to pause the stories and look things up on the internet or discuss things.

One of the neat things was when the book mentioned the wooden shoes of Holland. We had to stop it and take the time to look up pictures of wooden shoes and I have a friend who’s husband served a church mission in Holland and we were able to see some in real life a few days later.

This 43 chapter audiobook is just over 4 hours long.  The chapters were engaging and held our interest well.  Often days the kids would want to keep listening.  This is a living history book.  You feel like you are right there with them seeing the gorgeous flowers in Holland and smelling them too.  You picture the thatched roofs and cobble sidewalks.

There were some ups and downs in the book and even some adventure scenes.  We found ourselves rooting for the pilgrims throughout the book.

This book is on sale for November for just $15

For an additional $5 you can get a nice study guide to go along with the book.

The study guide is quite flexible.  It includes so much and you can pick and choose what you use.  Vocabulary words, projects and Venn diagraming are just some of the things you can choose from in the study guide.

It begins with a recommended list each week.  Don’t worry, you don’t need to read them all.  Usually one or two will suffice.

Once A Week Unit Studies also suggest a family night, playing games going on a field trip or watching themed movies.  {I love this suggestion, often we forget how important fun family time really is!}

A supply list.

A list of ways you can cross teach using the Once A Week Unit Study.  Things like:

  • History

This 52 paperback unit study book is just $17.95.

See a sample of it here! (Click where it says sample week)

A day/week in our life:

We followed the suggested schedule pretty much to a T.  It really is laid out so it is easy to incorporate.  Each day we spent about 15 minutes doing our chosen read aloud from the list of suggestions.  Then once a week, we chose a weekend day, since that worked best for us, we would do some of the suggested activities.

Some of our favorite activities from Christmas Comes to America are:

  • making homemade, from scratch marshmallows and decorating them to go in homemade hot cocoa
  • making homemade wassail
  • designing our own Christmas cards
  • making gingerbread houses
  • learning about concert/event etiquette
  • playing Christmas Trivia

and many more!

So now you can really see the memories you can make with your children this December.

Our thoughts and feelings:

With the busy Christmas season upon us I know that I want my children to still be able to be immersed in learning, but my time is stretched even thinner and I need the simplicity that is offered here.  I also am so grateful for the memories we are creating using this study.   If me, a working, blogging homeschool mom could fit this in and make learning fun through the holiday season, so can you!

Audrey Bunny {A Children’s Book- A Review}

I was lucky enough to be able to receive for review a copy of Audrey Bunny which is the #1 book on Amazon right now in Christian children’s books.

You could be lucky enough to win a copy!

Read on….

About Audrey Bunny

From best-selling women’s author Angie Smith (I Will Carry You, Mended) comes this sweet children’s book about a stuffed animal named Audrey Bunny who fears her imperfections make her unworthy of a little girl’s love. She'll learn the truth soon enough, and young readers will learn that everyone is special and wonderfully made by God.

Let author Angie Smith tell you more about this bookhttp://youtu.be/hB6YFDowXxs

Angie Smith is the wife of Todd Smith (lead singer of Dove Award winning group Selah), best-selling author of Mended, I Will Carry You, and What Women Fear, and one of the most popular speakers and blog writers in the country. She holds a Master’s degree in Developmental Psychology from Vanderbilt University and lives with her husband and daughters in Nashville, TN.

Written by: Angie Smith

Publisher: B&H Publishing

Hardcover with jacket:  32 pages

Release Date: October 1, 2013

$14.99

My take:

Caroline is a small girl who is shopping with her mom when she sees some stuffed animals.  She leaves the store without purchasing anything. The bunny feels very sad she didn’t get picked and wonders if she never will.  A few days later (on her birthday) they return and she chooses out her gift.  The stuffed bunny. She names her bunny Audrey.  Caroline and Audrey play together.  Audrey keeps trying to cover up a flaw in her.  Caroline takes her to show and tell and is proud of the bunny’s flaw and tells the class that is what made her special and that is why she was chosen.  Audrey Bunny feels so excited and loved that she doesn’t have to try and hide her flaw anymore.

This book was a fun heartfelt read.  As I read it aloud to my children I could see that the pictures held their attention and they paid attention to the storyline.

What makes this book extra special is the moral of the story, which is that everyone and everything deserves to be loved. Just because you’re different doesn’t mean you’re not special.  You can be special for the very reason you are different.

In the back of the book is a parent connection.  This is where suggestions are given to take the moral of the story further.

The Homemakers Mentor

headerWhat is it?

The Homemakers Mentor is just that- a collaborative collection of over 110 PDF files on a single CD that will inspire and encourage homemakers of all ages and types.

How did this all start?

Back in 2008, two women, Martha Greene and Rebekah Wilson, both of whom have been longtime homemakers, wives, mothers, small business owners and more, began encouraging other homemakers. Together they began a subscription only website to help and encourage other homemakers out there.  Many of the files shared on that website are now available all in one great limited edition collection, The Homemakers Mentor, at a price less then that of subscribing to the website. HomeMaker_sMentor

Let’s talk more about it.

The plethora of items on this cd can be overwhelming.  Don’t worry though, it is very well organized into folders and subfolders, you can just click into what you are looking for- this is also proven handy for me as I was just surfing the collection.  I wasn’t sure where to start and by browsing through I was able to come across plans that struck my fancy.

The wide range of topics include, cleaning, cooking, baking, party planning, organizing, sewing, emergency preparedness, crafts and so much more.

See the complete list of what is included here.

I often want to go back to the “olden days” when the pace of life was just slower and people just enjoyed things.  My mom was a single working mom when I was growing up.  Much of her time was spent making money just to support our family.  She did her best to teach us kids how to cook and clean and organize, there just wasn’t always time for that.  So I am grateful for the opportunity to have a mentor right here in The Homemakers Mentor. mini-lessoncovers-4rows

Some things that caught my eye:

The recipe for homemade oatmeal crème pies!  My son and I decided to make these together. We doubled the recipe batch because man- I love those things and so do my kids.  This made the mixer overflow and I had to run to the store halfway through for more ingredients. That was a lesson about planning ahead all in itself.

photo (1)

The cookies ended up perfect.  They were amazing.  Once I asked my husband what kind of cookie he was eating and he said, “The good ones.”

Such a fun way to spend some quality time one on one with my son and the whole family benefited by getting an awesome treat.  Plus we had plenty to share!

The Small Steps to Machine Sewing was a great file as well.  I do already know how to sew- my mom taught me that, but this had some tips in it that even I didn’t know.

The Mom and Me Aprons made out of towels are definitely a future project for my 8 year old daughter and I.

With the Master Bedroom Detailing File, I was able to get the encouragement and motivation to clean up my dump all bedroom and make it a more relaxing place for my husband and I.

Don’t just take my opinion on this, check out what others had to say here.

How to get all this for yourself:

You can purchase it now for $37 until Oct 18, 2013 with free shipping – after that it will be $47.

You can also win a copy for yourself. I have two to giveaway. Just enter using the Rafflecopter below.

Rufus and Ryan Go To Church {Review and Giveaway}

Let me introduce you to Ryan.

He is a cute 4 year old boy who goes to church and he takes his best friend a stuffed animal monkey named Rufus with him.

rufusandryan

Together these two are the stars of the book Rufus and Ryan Go to Church.  Written by Kathleen Long Bostrom and Illustrated by Rebecca Thornburgh.

The 20 page board book is full of beautiful watercolor pictures.

The short story taking you throughout a typical Sunday in Ryan’s family, including getting ready for church, going to church and after church.

During Church services they read the Bible, pray together, sing and have snacks.  Ryan is so excited to show Rufus all around church.

The book itself is sturdy and the pictures with the story keep my son’s interest.

This is the type of book I let my child take to church to keep him busy and quite while we listen.  It is also the type of book for a child who maybe hasn’t been to church and doesn’t know what to expect, or one who needs a soft reminder of how to behave at church.

Rufus and Ryan have another book out too!

Rufus and Ryan Say Their Prayers.

Would you like to win your own copy of Rufus and Ryan Go to Church?

It would make a perfect gift for:

    • - Children ages 2 to 5 and their parents, grandparents

Keeping kids entertained on the go. Bumper Wipe Clean Activities {A review}

Wipe Clean

Bumper Wipe Clean Activities is a small (6 1/2 x 8 inches) children’s dry erase activity book.

Written by Juliet David and Illustrated by Marie Allen.

This book retails for $12.99.

This 65 page book is full of a variety of Christian based activities.  These activities range from dot to dots, spot the mistakes, mazes, matching games, hidden objects, tracing letters and numbers and more!

The first thing I noticed about this book is how sturdy it is.  I love that every page is high quality laminated. The size is perfect to stick in a purse for those moments when you may need to pull out a quick activity.  I also like that it is spiral bound and therefor stays open.  That is essential for a book that a small child is trying to work in.  Can you imagine your little hands trying to do a maze and the book closing on you?  How frustrating!   The bright color pages with short stories are eye catching and attention grabbing.

photo 1 (1)

The book comes with its own small marker.  However you can use any dry erase or felt tip marker (or even a crayon on the pages) and they just wipe clean with a damp cloth.  photo 2 (1)

This book is recommended for ages 3 and up.

My 4 year old just loved this book.  With a crayon he was happy to use it in the car, or at quite time, even at church.  Each page has a simple sentence describing the picture scene.

photo 3

The activities are all easy enough for my 4 year old to figure out.  Once I read him the little spiel on each page he can just go and dive right in.

This book has kept him busy at some times when I really needed him to be entertained.  I love that I can just wipe it clean and use it again!  In fact, he is starting to remember and repeat some of his favorite stories and activities.

A Child’s Geography Volume 3 {Review & GIVEAWAY!}

I was incredibly blessed to be part of the launch team for A Child’s Geography Explore the Classical World and receive a copy of this book to review.

acgprize3

I’ll tell you what this is now our history and geography for this year!

Are your kids bored with history and geography?  Have you searched and searched and never found a fun engaging way to teach or learn history?  Do you need something that can be taught to multiple age ranges?  Something affordable, that won’t break the bank? Something with very little teacher prep?

If you answered yes to any or all of these questions then, read on!  (If not, still read on!)

This book, written by Terri Johnson, is the 3rd in a series.  The first two books are written by Ann Voskamp and are A Child’s Geography: Explore His Earth and A Child’s Geography: Explore the Holy Land.  Neither of which we have ever used.  All 3 books are published by Knowledge QuestKQ-LOGOThey are said to all compliment each other nicely, but you do not have to make the commitment to do all of them.  They also do not have to be done in any particular order.  I can appreciate a book that stands on it’s own like this.  This book is geared toward kids in grades 1 through 6 and can be used with a few supplements for older kids.  I have primarily been using this with my 8 year old 3rd grader.

Explore The Classical World has 15 chapters covering 11 countries.

  • Greece
  • Macedonia
  • Albania
  • Montenegro
  • Serbia
  • Bosnia
  • Herzegovina
  • Croatia
  • Slovenia
  • Italy and,
  • Malta

Each book also comes with a CD-Rom full of optional activities such as map work, prayer guides, activities and and recipes, each organized by chapter for easy to find resources.

Each chapter is written in a conversational style with sentences like; “Let’s head back down the zigzag footpath to the port below.” You really feel like you are on vacation in the location you are learning about.  A true living book!  Not a boring bland textbook!

This is not written chronologically but rather by location. Katey has had an amazing time being able to remember what she has learned this way, feeling like she is actually there.

The pictures are stunning!  Katey fully loved the way every location was described using multiple senses.

We chose to do about 1 chapter each week.  Sometimes a chapter took more than one week.  We fully used the CD-Rom full of optional activities.

We have made mosaics, PB272043baklava, PB272044and even painted some Greek pottery.  PB272041PB272042

There are truly so many activities to choose from and the book stresses that it is not important to do them all.  Terri  wants to give you more options then you will ever need!  The recipes are simple, unique and true to the culture you are learning about.

Each chapter has two “stopping points.”  One is about the middle of the chapter and one is at the end.  At each one you are asked to take field notes.  - Katey is not a star writer and we chose to do her field notes picture style.  She drew and colored pictures about what she learned and remembered.  This took the pressure of her worrying about what to write and be willing to listen and learn. There are also some discussion questions.  I totally appreciate those as sometimes I am just not sure what to ask my kids to make sure they were listening intently and paying attention.  These are questions like; “What is a peninsula?”, “Would you like to live there?”  and “Why?”

We have been using this book as our special one on one- no interruption school time that I try to do with each of my children.  That has made this book particularly special for us.

What a typical week of using this geography looked like for us:

We began each week on Monday reading the first half of the chapter together. Doing the discussion questions that came up.  Then she would draw a picture of her favorite part.  Tuesdays we would do one of the activities in the book, usually a craft type activity.  On Wednesdays we would read the second half of the chapter and do the discussion questions, again, she would draw in her field guide. We took Thursdays off since that is our co-op day.  On Friday’s we would make one of the suggested recipe from the CD-Rom.

Explore the Classical World is priced at $34.95 and can be purchased from Knowledge Quest.

The 5 Money Personalities {GIVEAWAY}

Which money language do you speak?

What about your spouse or other members of your family?

It’s been said that many people divorce over money problems.  Because they don’t agree with each other over money.  They don’t understand where the other is coming from when it comes to money.

To be on the same page or even in the same book as far as money goes is crucial to relationships.

The 5 Money Personalities is a book written by Scott and Bethany Palmer.

Praying With The Grain ~ A book review.

Praying with the Grain by Pablo Martinez is about How your personality affects the way you pray.  While I have always been interested in psychology and why we do the things we do, I had never really thought about it affecting the way we pray.

This book is divided into 2 parts.

Part 1: The Psychology of Prayer

Chapter 1: Different Prayers for Different People

This chapter will help you answer many questions such as:

  • Why do I find it difficult to pray?
  • Why do I feel so hypocritical when I pray?
  • And more

Chapter 2: Overcoming Difficulties

This chapter talks about Emotional Problems and Prayer

Chapter 3: The Therapeutic Value of Prayer

This chapter goes into Prayer- A Love Relationship

Questions and Answers

Which is full of some of the most frequently asked questions about prayer.

Part 2: The Apologetics of Prayer

Chapter 4: Prayer: Psychological Illusion

A psychiatrist’s viewpoint on prayer

Chapter 5: Are All Prayers Alike?

Christian Prayer and Eastern Meditation

Notes.

A chapter by chapter of sited references.

The book really covers how our personality affects the way we pray and is a very insightful.  It really helps you understand the type of person you are; introvert, extrovert, thinker, feeler, etc. and how to understand and work with your own spiritual path.

This book was quite the interesting read and I do suggest it.

God Helps Me Bible. Bible Stories for Children.

God Helps Me Bible

The Author Juliet David has written many children’s stories and Bible activity books. Her other interests include painting, music, and travel to Israel and other Bible lands. This experienced author lives in London with her family.

The Illustrator is Clare Caddy

The Bible is an amazing account of our history.  We want our children to know how important it is from such a young age.  The Bible can be long and overwhelming for a child.  Sometimes they just need to hear Bible stories.  Colorful Pictures and short sentences keep your child’s attention while you are reading it to them.  This book goes over many of the ways God and Jesus have helped people throughout history.  My 2 year old son loves to be read this book.  It is simple enough that my 7 year old can read it to him or to herself.

This book is spiral bound so it can lay flat which makes it extra easy for children to hold and read.  Each page is also made out of sturdy laminated paper which makes this book and each page easy to wipe clean.  I have found this book to be very durable and stand up to my 2 year old.  The art work is just right for children.  The colors and details are not overwhelming.

We have really enjoyed this book and I know we will continue to enjoy it for years to come.  It is a great quiet book to look at while at church also.
