Growing Up Wild

Home Sweet Hut: You learn how they built their house using a combination of their American culture and the Wano culture. 

Supply Trip:  Living in a remote jungle means no grocery stores or way to get supplies.  Go on a supply trip with the Wild family.  See how the Wano people all come together to help. 

Sun & Water: See how the Wild family harnesses the usefulness of their surroundings.

Volume 4 taught us about the Wano cultural.  We were able to see how it differs from ours.

This is type of reality shows I want my family watching.  These videos are great for any age. I even enjoyed them.

Grace and Truth Boys Heritage

Grace & Truth Books is an online Christian bookstore.  Something that makes them unique is that they are family owned and ran.  They also publish books with old fashioned values and are not all about the trends. 

We received 2 books from their Boys Heritage collection.

Gerrit and His Dog $5.50 is a book in which the author is unknown and had previously been out of print.  Grace and Truth brought it back.  It is about a boy named Gerrit and his dog named Brownie.  Gerrit is being raised by his uncle.  Gerrit and Brownie get separated and do end up finding each other again. Throughout this story your child will see the hand of God and the blessings both Gerrit and Brownie receive through difficult times. 

There is a second story in the back of this book, The Royal Law.  This story helps your children to understand the commandment of Do Unto Others, as You Would Want Done Unto You. 

Tommy really enjoyed these stories.  He is very into old fashioned, good value type reading and this type of book is often hard to find.  

The second book we received was A Faithful Boys Influence $6.25.  “Aunt Friendly” is the author of this book.

In true Grace and Truth style this book has the same old fashioned, good, wholesome values as the other one we read.  This book is about a boy who visits his aunt and by example helps the townspeople to walk closer with The Lord.  The character qualities in the main character, Charlie, are some that I am grateful Tommy was able to read about.  He is a great example.

There is a second part in this book as well.  Ears for Little Gleaners.  Which is a collection of 19th Century Sunday School lessons.

Both of these books were easy enough reads for Tommy that he was able to enjoy them and understand them without to much frustration.  They were also a good length for him.  He doesn’t really enjoy novels. 

Grace and Truth Books sells all of their Heritage Series as a set, which is 9 books for $39.  These books range for boys ages 8-14.

Apologia Journey to Faithfulness

 

Apologia Educational Ministries is a company that provides many types of creation based materials, from science, to worldview, to devotionals and more.

This time I reviewed a devotional book, Journeys of Faithfulness by Sarah Clarkson. ($13.00) Check out the Table of Contents.

This book is what I consider Bible based fiction.  The beginning of each chapter is a story in which you will read about 3 girls, Ruth, Esther and Mary.  Each of the stories you will read are similar to the ones in the Bible. However, it uses fictional accounts of some of the details and feelings of these women. 

Next comes a devotional straight from Sarah Clarkson’s heart.  There is a Bible Study along with Scripture references for you to look into.

Following that comes the “Journey Journal”.  Which is a place where you can document your own discoveries and feelings as studying the Bible.

If you check out this sample chapter you will easily see the layout and flow of the book I am talking about.

This book is recommended for girls ages 12 and up. 

I felt I needed to read it and study it first before I let my 12 year old daughter delve into it.  I have taken the time to really dive into this book for me.  I have actually never read/done a devotional type book before. I am very happy with the layout of the book.   I enjoy how the book reads as fiction.  Having the Bible verses listed in the Bible Study section helped me to be able to read straight from the Bible and get the knowledge from there.  The “Journey Journal” right there at the end of each chapter is my favorite thing about this.  I was able to jot down any thoughts, feelings or questions I had very quickly.  I liked that there were 3 pages for me to fill in as I am a doodler. 

See.

I haven’t quite finished the book yet, but when I do I will let my daughter go through it on her own. Yes, my book, then she can see all my journaling notes and add hers to it.  I think it will be nice to pass it on to her this way.  I will also have already gone through it and studied it so if any questions arise I will be ready.

Doubling Up the Weekly Wrap Up a Few Days Late….

 

Family Life

These past two weeks blogging has taken a back seat.  We have been too busy living life that I have had very little time to blog about it. That’s how it goes sometimes. 

 

It snowed!  This picture was taken at the beginning of the storm.  It actually snowed more than this picture shows.   

Of course the snow and cold means it’s time to bring out the hot cocoa.  Good thing I stocked up the previous week at the grocery store.

Tommy is on our 4H Teen Council.  The group made treats to sell as a fundraiser at our pumpkin festival.  We weren’t able to attend the actual festival, he was able to help make the treats.  When I went to pick him up I saw these caramel apples and I couldn’t resist.  I became their first customer!  My other kids were all so surprised I brought them all home caramel apples.  They were so yummy!

We carved pumpkins.  This year was great!  The older kids didn’t need or want any help and Katey needed very little.  Tyler and I carved our pumpkin together.

Halloween activities were to be had all week. 

School Life

Katey’s morning book has been completed.  I finally have all the pages I want in it, as well as the order I wanted everything.  I took it to Staples and had it bound.  (I may have a slight obsession with binding things.)  I got all of the pages from Our Aussie Homeschool.  I did add in blank Handwriting Without Tears paper in the back for her to journal each day.  I had planned her to take 5-10 minutes per day on this and it has taken her on average 30 minutes each day. 

Tommy has been learning about measuring speed and how to calculate it both in a straight line (walking) and on a wheel (biking).  He has also been learning about how to calculate projectile motion.  The picture above was used to show that the closer to the center of a circle the faster it will spin.

Here he is calculating the speed of a bike tire.  We talked about how an electronic speedometer has to figure out the same formula he did. 

Tyler has been loving all his busy bag activities.  The lacing cards still prove to be a challenge for him, but he loves trying.

Emily has been learning about Indians (Native Americans) in Prairie Primer.  One night I had her make Navajo Tacos for dinner.  They were so good!

Fun School

We classified the kids’ Halloween candy, taxonomy style.  This was really fun and they each wished they hadn’t eaten candy before doing this.  This will tie right into some of our science lessons next week, which happen to be on Taxonomy Classification of plants and animals.

Another really fun thing we did was catch a spider and force it to weave a web right in front of us.  Our spider was shy about it and didn’t weave much but it was still neat.  It was really neat to see him jump from one stick to the other and to walk across the strands. This experiment came from Science Experiments in a Bag. Check out my review of those books.

I had Emily teach Katey how to play hopscotch.  This was great sister bonding time. 

Real Life

We got “Booed”.  That’s where a secret neighbor brings you treats and you do it to two other neighbors, it goes around the neighborhood.  Well in an attempt to make my cookies, I burned an entire batch.  I thought they would be fine to dip in milk.  NOPE!  They were gross.

Our Favorite Resource

These books by Kate Waters are great.  They go through a real life day in someone’s life.  My children enjoyed reading them and learned what life was like in Pilgrim times.  I checked these books out from our library.  They really are great books, with an accurate historical portrayal.
